- City and port in Ohio, USA, on the Ohio
- River; population (1980) 1,400,000. Chief
- industries include machinery, clothing,
- furniture making, wine, chemicals, and
- meat-packing. Founded 1788, it became a city
- 1819. It attracted large numbers of European
- immigrants, many of them Germans, during the
- 19th century. It has two universities, and a
- major symphony orchestra.
